Fifth Inmate Escaped from New Orleans Jail Captured; 5 Still on the Loose
New Orleans Jailbreak: Fifth Inmate Recaptured
In a development that’s been closely watched, another inmate who escaped from a New Orleans jail has been apprehended. Late Tuesday night, the Louisiana State Police confirmed the capture of Corey Boyd, a 19-year-old involved in last week’s jailbreak. This brings the number of escapees still at large down to five.
A photo released by the state police shows Boyd in a tank top and t-shirt, though details on how he was caught remain sparse. What’s clear is that Boyd, facing charges including second-degree murder, is now back in custody. His return to jail marks progress in the ongoing effort to track down the fugitives.
The daring escape took place at the Orleans Parish Correctional Facility on May 16, 2025. It began in the predawn hours when inmates were caught on surveillance video breaking through a cell door around 12:22 a.m. CDT. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson explained that the group then managed to breach a wall behind the cell’s toilet, facilitating their initial escape.
By 1 a.m., video footage captured the inmates fleeing through a loading dock. Shortly after, at about 1:19 a.m., they scaled a fence using blankets to protect themselves from barbed wire, eventually disappearing across Interstate 10 into a nearby neighborhood.
The sheriff’s office didn’t become aware of the escape until approximately 8:30 a.m., several hours after it occurred. At that time, no deputy was assigned to monitor the area where the jailbreak was initiated, and a civilian observer had temporarily left their post for food.
In an intriguing twist, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Tuesday that a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the jail has been arrested on allegations of aiding the inmates’ escape. This comes amidst an internal investigation where three workers have already been suspended without pay.
Sheriff Hutson suggested that internal assistance may have played a role in facilitating the jailbreak. She highlighted ongoing requests for over $5 million to fix faulty cell door locks as part of long-term security improvements-funding that’s yet to materialize.
This incident has sparked significant conversation and concern among residents and officials alike. While some express relief at Boyd’s recapture, others remain anxious knowing five fugitives are still unaccounted for. The unfolding events underscore ongoing challenges within correctional facilities and the pressing need for enhanced security measures.
