Yankees Place Stanton on 60-Day IL, Add Bryan De La Cruz from Waivers
With Giancarlo Stanton Sidelined, Yankees Add Bryan De La Cruz to Mix
The New York Yankees made a roster adjustment Thursday, placing Giancarlo Stanton on the 60-day injured list while claiming Bryan De La Cruz off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. There wasn’t much buildup — just a necessary shift, perhaps, in response to how things have been unfolding.
Stanton, now 35, hasn’t stepped into a regular-season game this year. He’s been dealing with tendinitis in both elbows — something that’s lingered longer than expected. He did join teammates for batting practice last week, which might’ve been a hopeful moment, though the team hasn’t given any indication when he’ll return. Or even if he’s close.
This marks Stanton’s eighth season wearing pinstripes. Last year, he still put together 27 home runs and 72 RBIs across 114 games — decent output, all things considered. But where he really seemed to come alive was in October: 15 hits, seven of them homers, 16 RBIs. That run helped push the Yankees into the World Series, though memory fades fast when injuries stack up.
As for De La Cruz, 28, he didn’t stick long with Atlanta. His stint this year included just 16 games and a .191 batting average. Now he’s heading to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, maybe hoping to reset. Career-wise, he’s posted a .251 average, with 58 home runs and just over 200 RBIs — collected while bouncing through stops with the Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates, and most recently, the Braves.
Whether this move turns out to be temporary depth or something more… that part isn’t clear. But it’s one of those roster notes that could quietly matter a few months from now.
