Tragedy in Chatham: Car Crashes Into After-School Camp, Killing Four Including Children

In a heartbreaking turn of events, four people — including three children — lost their lives after a vehicle plowed through an after-school program building in Chatham, Illinois, on the afternoon of April 28.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the incident happened around 3:20 p.m. at the YNOT After School Camp, located just 11 miles south of Springfield. For reasons still under investigation, a vehicle veered off the road and drove directly through the building, striking several individuals inside before exiting out the other side.

The victims who died in the crash were two 7-year-olds, an 8-year-old, and an 18-year-old. Authorities also confirmed that six other children sustained injuries, one of whom remains in critical condition. Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

At least three more people were hit outside the building, ISP said. The driver — the only person in the vehicle — was reportedly unharmed and taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. Toxicology tests are underway, but early reports suggest this was not a targeted act.

“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” ISP said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families, first responders, and the entire Chatham community during this devastating time.”

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including local police, firefighters, county officials, and emergency medical teams. Governor JB Pritzker also issued a public message of sympathy, urging Illinoisans to support the victims and await updates from local authorities.
