Off-Duty New Jersey Officer Arrested After Violent Home Invasion, Police Say
An off-duty police officer in New Jersey is facing serious charges after allegedly forcing her way into a home and assaulting two individuals in a late-night confrontation last week, according to authorities.
Rebecca Sayegh, 32, an officer with the Toms River Township Police Department, was charged with multiple offenses including home invasion burglary, two counts of assault, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Incident Unfolds in Berkeley Township
The charges stem from an April 25 disturbance in Berkeley Township. Police were dispatched to a residence at approximately 11:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a domestic incident.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that Sayegh had allegedly smashed the home’s glass front door to gain entry, then assaulted and threatened two people inside, according to the prosecutor’s statement. She also reportedly caused damage to a vehicle parked in the driveway belonging to one of the victims.
“Sayegh was taken into custody at the scene – after resisting efforts to peacefully place her under arrest,” officials said.
Charges Upgraded Due to Severity
Initially, Sayegh was served with a summons pending her court appearance. However, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office later refiled the charges under a warrant on April 28 due to what they described as the “serious nature” of the alleged offenses. She was then transported to the Ocean County Jail where she remains pending a detention hearing.
Past Recognition Now Overshadowed
In 2021, Officer Sayegh had received a Class B commendation from the department for her actions during a house fire, where she helped escort a resident and her pets to safety.
“Officer Sayegh is commended for her swift action, bravery, and lifesaving actions,” the department stated at the time.
Investigation Continues
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office concluded its statement by praising the Berkeley Township Police Department for their role in the investigation.
