Ohio Deputy Killed by Father of Teen Fatally Shot by Police a Day Earlier, Officials Say
A traffic detail near the University of Cincinnati turned tragic Friday afternoon after a Hamilton County sheriff’s deputy was struck and killed by a vehicle driven by the father of a teen who had been fatally shot by police just one day earlier, according to authorities.
The incident happened around 1 p.m. while the deputy was directing traffic during a graduation ceremony. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge confirmed the deputy was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
“I knew the man,” said Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey. “He was a wonderful, dedicated person. This is a tremendous loss.”
Deputy Had Recently Retired
Although the deputy had officially retired a few months ago, he continued serving the community in a part-time capacity as a special deputy.
The driver involved in the fatal crash was the father of an 18-year-old shot and killed by Cincinnati police the day prior, authorities revealed. He was also transported to a hospital after the incident. His identity has not been made public as of Friday evening.
During a University of Cincinnati commencement ceremony later that day, UC President Neville Pinto opened with a somber moment of silence for the fallen deputy.
Shooting of the Teen Sparked Tragedy
The teen killed Thursday was one of four suspects reportedly involved in the theft of a Kia SUV. Police say the vehicle was stolen from Edgewood, Kentucky, and officers confronted the suspects around 9:30 a.m. when they attempted to flee on foot.
During the foot chase, one of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm with an extended magazine at an officer. The officer opened fire, fatally striking the teen in a brief six-second encounter, according to Fox 19 Now.
Police said two of the other suspects were apprehended, while one remains at large.
Investigation Underway
The Cincinnati Police Department is now leading the investigation into the deputy’s death. Authorities have not confirmed whether the crash was intentional or accidental as the investigation remains active.
